  • General Manager, BMA Hay Point Coal Terminal

Melissa Johnson, or Mel as she prefers to be called, is General Manager at BMA’s Hay Point Coal Terminal. She was appointed to the role in December 2018, having previously held roles of Engineering Manager, Major Shutdowns Manager and Maintenance Manager within BMA. As General Manager at Hay Point Coal Terminal, Mel leads a team of approximately 400 people all working to safely ship around 55 million tonnes per year of metallurgical coal, produced from BMA and BMC’s coal mines across the Bowen Basin, to international customers in countries such as Japan and China.

Mel spent 10 years of her early career in Hong Kong, working for a joint venture waste management company as an Engineering and Construction Manager. She moved back to Australia in 2008 following the birth of her first child and joined BHP in 2011 in the Manganese division. Mel transitioned to BMA Coal in 2014 and lived in Moranbah until her relocation to Hay Point in 2016. Mel is very passionate about an inclusive workforce and strongly advocates for this driving diversity in high performing teams. Mel’s other passion is supporting local communities and the regional bases in which we operate. She is regularly seen presenting at forums within our region.  At home, Mel and Jon have four primary-school aged children who keep them on their toes. When not otherwise occupied, Mel is an avid triathlete, competing in Olympic distance and Half Ironman events.
